Bristle-Free Grill Brush Buyer’s Guide

Wire grill brushes have earned negative publicity: the tiny metal bristles can break off, stick to the grate, and end up in your food.

A bristle-free brush has no wire bristles to shed. Read more about the risk of swallowing metal bristles. Below: what to look for in a bristle-free brush, which Boyer suits your grate, and answers to the questions grillers ask most.

  • Does not get stuck on the crossbars when brushing

* The original Boyer Brush. The Boyer Mini’s frame is painted cold-rolled steel.

How to choose a bristle-free grill brush

Four things to look for, and how the Boyer Brush answers each one.

  1. No wire bristles

This is the one that matters most. Thin wire bristles can break off, stay on the grate and end up in food; the dangers of wire-bristle grill brushes are well documented. The Boyer Brush cleans with stainless-steel springs set into the frame, not wire bristles.

  2. Made for a hot grill

Before or after you cook, the method is the same: turn the grill up to its highest setting, let it reach about 500 °F (260 °C), then brush while it is hot. So look for a brush made for heat. The Boyer Brush works on cold and hot grills and cleans best on a hot one.

  3. Cleans the top and the sides of the bars

Burnt-on food builds up on the sides of the bars as well as on top, so look for a head that follows the shape of the grate. The springs of the Boyer Brush scrape the top and the sides of each bar, and flex over the crossbars so the stroke stays smooth.

  4. No replacement parts to buy

Check what you would have to buy again. The original Boyer Brush has a solid one-piece cast-aluminium frame, rust-resistant, a 16-inch (42 cm) handle that keeps your hands away from the heat, and no replacement parts to buy.

Which Boyer for your grate

Both Boyer brushes are made for standard bar grates (parallel bars with gaps between them): stainless steel, cast iron, porcelain-coated or enamelled.

Expanded-metal grates, the stretched metal mesh with an open diamond pattern, are a different case: neither Boyer brush is made for them.

Size matters too. The original Boyer Brush, with its 16-inch (42 cm) handle, is built for full-size grills; the Boyer Mini is the better size for portable grills, drum smokers and smaller grills.

How to clean a grill grate

Clean before or after you cook. Either way, turn the grill up to its highest setting first and let it reach about 500 °F (260 °C). Then, with the Boyer Brush: set the brush down flat with both hands, push it forward and bring it back without pressing hard, then add horizontal pressure to the left or right as you push. Questions grillers ask

Can I clean my grill while it is hot?

Yes, and that is the way to do it. Turn the grill up to its highest setting, then brush while it is hot, before or after you cook. Use a brush made for heat: the Boyer Brush works on cold and hot grills and cleans best on a hot one.

Can I use the Boyer Brush on porcelain-coated or enamelled grates?

Yes. It is made for standard bar grates: stainless steel, cast iron, porcelain-coated or enamelled. It is not made for expanded-metal grates.

Which Boyer do I need: the original or the Mini?

The original, with its 16-inch (42 cm) handle and solid cast-aluminium frame, is built for full-size grills. The Mini, with the same springs in a compact painted cold-rolled steel frame, suits portable grills, drum smokers and smaller grills.

How do I clean the brush itself?

Rinse it with hot water after each use. The Mini’s frame is painted cold-rolled steel, so let it dry after rinsing.
